Nestled in the heart of Winterville, North Carolina, Main & Mill Oyster Bar & Tavern offers an inviting escape for lovers of fresh seafood and Southern-inspired fare. This captivating restaurant embraces coastal Carolina cuisine, blending rich, comforting flavors with expertly crafted dishes that celebrate locally sourced ingredients and maritime traditions.
The menu is a treasure trove of delectable choices, with standout highlights including the iconic Crab Shack Oysters—fresh and briny, perfect for oyster aficionados—and indulgent starters like the creamy, lump crab Crab Dip and crispy, golden Crab Cakes. Among the entrées, the Shrimp & Grits paints a soulful picture of the South, featuring jumbo shrimp bathed in a savory Low Country gravy with smoked bacon and trinity vegetables, all resting atop lush Parmesan stone-ground grits. Guests rave about the Chipotle Scallop Linguine, where seared scallops interplay with smoky bacon in a velvety chipotle cream sauce, balancing spice and decadence masterfully. For those craving heartier fare, the Carolina Pork Chop and tender Duck Breast deliver unforgettable moments of flavor and texture, accompanied by signature sides like the rich and buttery Crab Mac and Cheese and the crispy, flavorful Duck Fat Potatoes.
The dining atmosphere at Main & Mill exudes a warm, welcoming vibe that seamlessly fuses comfort with understated sophistication. Reviewers highlight the attentive and friendly staff, who ensure every meal feels like a special occasion without the fuss. Whether it's a spontaneous girls’ night out or a quiet dinner with a loved one, the tavern’s lively yet cozy setting provides the perfect backdrop to savor each bite and sip. The bar, known for creative cocktails like the bright and refreshing Blueberry Mule and the zesty Channel Orange, is a buzzy spot to linger and enjoy the evening.
While most reviews praise the quality and freshness of the seafood and meats, some guests note small presentation details — like the steamed oysters served out of the shell — that feel a bit unconventional. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise highly praised experience. Diners consistently commend the perfect execution of steaks, flavorful appetizers such as Tuna Tataki and Oysters Rockefeller, and the tender, juicy Ribeye paired with their indulgent mac and cheese.
For dessert, the ever-changing cheesecake flavor speaks to an element of surprise and delight, while the classic Tiramisu offers a rich finale with notes of coffee and rum-soaked sponge cake, laced with velvety cream and chocolate. Those with a sweet tooth are encouraged to ask about the “Sweet Surprise,” a chef’s special that promises an inventive and luscious end to your meal.
At Main & Mill Oyster Bar & Tavern, every dish tells a story of Southern tradition, coastal freshness, and culinary passion. It’s a place where the food comforts and excites the palate simultaneously, and the friendly atmosphere invites you to relax and stay awhile. Food was really good! We got the steamed oysters, fried shrimp, scallop linguine, and the Ribeye/mac&cheese. Quality meat and seafood. Mac and cheese is awesome! Only downside is presentation of the steamed oysters, they were served in a bowl and not in the shell which was a bit odd.
My boyfriend and I took a last minute trip out of town on a Friday evening. As we were passing through, I suggested to stop here for dinner. We did not have a reservation so I suggested stopping in, maybe seeing if the bar was available. The hostess and manager greeted us and asked if we had reservations. We told them we did not and asked about the bar. The manager checked and told us it was full and quickly found us a table! The food, atmosphere and accommodations were excellent! If we did not live two hours away, we would frequently visit but we do plan on stopping in every time we travel this way!
Tables not jammed together, excellent staff, and food was delicious. Had the tuna tataki and oysters Rockefeller for apps. The ribeye done medium rare was on point. AND I am extremely picky when it comes to steak. Ate here more than several years ago and was unimpressed. Would recommend Main and Mill to all that ask now. Had a wonderful dinner with the wife.
Service, food, and ambiance were all 10/10! This was an impromptu girls’ dinner and even without a reservation we were seated very quickly. The host was super friendly and welcoming, and Anna, our waitress, was wonderful attentive without being overbearing and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the atmosphere was the perfect mix of lively and comfortable. Definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to!
This was my second and my husbands first time at Main and Mill. We ordered the channel orange- which was very good. We had the belly and Brussels which was delicious. I had clam chowder which was delicious (the best around imo). I ordered the shrimp and grits, which was delicious but not the best. The tails were left on the shrimp which was annoying to stick my fingers in the dish everytime. My husband ordered the main burger, and he said it was delicious but really loved the Mac and cheese. My previous meal was honey glazed salmon which was no longer on the menu. And that was delicious as was the crab drip.
A friend and I went Wednesday for dinner and it was her first time. It was an all-around pleasant experience! The host was welcoming, he had a great smile. Zeke was our server and he was fantastic, great personality and somehow sold me on trying the pork shank. The cooks nailed it on our appetizers and entrees as well as the bartenders who made our drinks 10/10. I have been a few times before and have never encountered a rude staff member or bad food experience.
First time here! Parking was crazy! But once got into the restaurant had 30 minute wait cause did not make reservations! But was sat at table right at 30 minute mark. The waitress Abby was excellent and went over the menu since our first time! The food came out hot and seasoned well and delicious! We enjoyed all our food! The purple rain drink was so good that I ordered two. The atmosphere was not too loud and it was a pleasure to eat there! We will definitely will be returning!!!
